Fae

The Fae are a species of sapient plant creatures, primarily native to The Underground, but with subspecies spanning a variety of environments. They possess green skin, large brightly colored eyes, and long arms, along with the distinctive flower growing from their head.

Subspecies

Lightfae

Lightfae are most commonly found in The Underground, with a substantial population also living on the surface. On average, they are slightly smaller than humans, and tend to retain a humanoid body plan. On average their skin is a light green tone, and their flowers take on more pastel hues.

Lightfae do not eat solid food, absorbing energy from the sun and luminescent crystal formations in the Underground. They have a largely vestigial digestive system, which is mainly used for handling fluids as Lightfae still consume water.

Lightfae are by far the most common subspecies, nearly matching humans in terms of population.

Deepfae

Deepfae are almost exclusively native to the Deep Underground. They tend to be very small, usually no taller than 4'6". Their skin is a darker, mottled green, and their petals tend to have more bright neon colors.

Unlike Lightfae, Deepfae subsist off solid food, with meals typically consisting of prepared bugs and moss. Due to limited availability of nutrients, they eat little and have generally lethargic lifestyles. Sleeping together in piles of 3-8 members is a common group activity.

Due to their native environment having almost zero natural light, Deepfae have virtually no UV resistance. Their skin burns almost immediately, and extended periods of time in direct sunlight can prove fatal.

Due to the abundance of mineral resources in the Deep Underground, Deepfae are responsible for a large chunk of the worlds mining industry. However, poor working conditions and growing demands have lead to strife amongst Deepfae, leading to some to migrate to other regions of the Underground.

Deepfae are generally more culturally conservative, though migration has opened up with the higher underground and surface more in recent years.

Bogfae

Bogfae are a rarer subspecies, native to a handful of bogs and swamps on the surface. They tend to be slightly taller than humans, with dark green skin and carnivorous plant features in place of the traditional flower. Their features are generally more gaunt and gangly. Like Deepfae, they consume solid food to make up for lack of soil nutrients in the regions they tend to live.
